Under the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement standardized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST Guide to the SI, Appendix B), 1 avoirdupois pound (lb) is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms (kg):
| Conversion Direction | Exact Mathematical Formula | Practical Everyday Multiplier | Worked Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kilograms to Pounds (kg → lb) | Pounds = Kilograms ÷ 0.45359237 | Pounds ≈ Kilograms × 2.20462262 | 70 kg × 2.20462262 = 154.32 lbs |
| Pounds to Kilograms (lb → kg) | Kilograms = Pounds × 0.45359237 | Kilograms ≈ Pounds × 0.4536 | 150 lbs × 0.45359237 = 68.04 kg |
| Pounds to Stones (lb → st) | Stones = Pounds ÷ 14 (1 stone = 14 lbs) | Remainder in lbs = Pounds MOD 14 | 154.32 lbs = 11 stone, 0.32 lbs |
| Decimal Pounds to Ounces (lb → oz) | Ounces = (Decimal part of lb) × 16 | 1 pound = 16 avoirdupois ounces | 0.3236 lbs × 16 = 5.18 oz (154 lb 5.2 oz) |
To convert kilograms to pounds in your head without a calculator:
Double the kilograms (70 kg × 2 = 140).
Take 10% of that doubled number (140 ÷ 10 = 14).
Add them together: 140 + 14 = 154 lbs (the exact figure is 154.32 lbs).
To convert pounds to kilograms in your head: divide the pounds in half (150 lbs ÷ 2 = 75), then subtract 10% of that half (75 − 7.5 = 67.5 kg, close to the exact 68.04 kg).

A common kitchen and postal shipping mistake is misreading the digits after the decimal point in lbs as ounces:
Because 1 pound = 16 ounces (not 10 or 100 ounces), 0.5 lbs is 8 ounces (0.5 × 16 = 8 oz), and 0.25 lbs is 4 ounces (0.25 × 16 = 4 oz).
Similarly, in the UK and Ireland, 1 stone = 14 pounds, so 10.5 stone equals 10 stone, 7 pounds (0.5 × 14 = 7 lbs), not 10 stone, 5 pounds.
When converting dry baking ingredients (like flour or sugar) across US, UK, and Canadian recipes, remember that cups measure volume whereas kilograms/grams/ounces measure weight—see our complete guide to US cups vs. UK cups recipe measurement conversions.
Use the built-in spreadsheet CONVERT function (assuming your weight value is in cell A2):
Kilograms to Pounds (kg → lbs): =CONVERT(A2, "kg", "lbm") (or =A2 * 2.20462262)
Pounds to Kilograms (lbs → kg): =CONVERT(A2, "lbm", "kg") (or =A2 * 0.45359237)
There are approximately 2.20462 pounds (or 2 pounds and 3.27 ounces) in 1 kilogram. To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply the kilogram value by 2.20462262.
Exactly 50 pounds equals 22.68 kilograms (50 × 0.45359237 = 22.6796 kg). Conversely, when an international airline sets a 23 kg baggage allowance, that equals 50.71 pounds.
First multiply the kilograms by 2.20462262 to get total pounds, then divide that pound total by 14. The whole number is the stones (st), and the remainder (Total lbs − (Stones × 14)) is the remaining pounds (lb).
No. Everyday body weight, groceries, and gym equipment use the avoirdupois pound (16 oz = 453.59237 g), whereas precious metals use the troy pound (12 troy oz = 373.24 g). This converter uses the standard avoirdupois pound.
